By the 1950s, Lowry’s interests had moved on from paintings crowds although he never entirely abandoned his industrial scenes (and it was the subject matter most collectors wanted to buy). His later work shows smaller groups of individuals, often with no background details at all. Their relationship to each other is often left unexplained and in this example no clue is given as to what has drawn their attention off to the left of the picture.
