Sandcourt Rocks on the River Wye
Cox lived at Hereford from 1814 to 1827, teaching art at local schools and taking private pupils. He did a great deal of sketching outdoors, and there is a chalk drawing of this location at Birmingham City Art Gallery. The rich texture of the watercolour suggests it may have been painted, or at least finished, in the studio. Despite this, 'Sandcourt Rocks on the River Wye', like many of Cox's watercolours, conveys a feeling of the direct experience of nature.
