Study of a Male Figure

Studying from nude models was an important component of artistic training in the nineteenth century. Leighton continued this practice throughout his career beginning each picture by painting the figures in nude in monochrome before adding in their draperies or costume and finally applying colour. This small study of a male torso reflects this practice focusing on the sculptural quality of the man’s torso. This painting was owned by Leighton’s close friend and neighbour, artist George Frederic Watts, who gifted it to the museum.
