Attic Black-Figure Lekythos

The function of this lekythos is a mystery. A common type of oil container used in domestic contexts, it was also a frequent funeral gift. Instead of mourning at a grave marker, here warriors make an offering at an altar before setting off to battle. The presence of the goddess Athena, with her helmet, spear, and shield featuring decorative cut-outs on either side, also suggests the scene may be heroic.
