Boat badge

The boat badge of HMS 'Rainbow' 1930. Official pattern approved in July 1929. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing a submarine. The design shows on a black field, a rainbow proper. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. HMS 'Rainbow' was a Rainbow-class submarine built at Chatham and launched in 1930. At the start of the Second World War she was stationed in the Far East. She was re-deployed to the Mediterranean and is likely to have been sunk in collision with the Italian steamer 'Antonetta Costa' in 1940 of Bari.
