Cape Gris Nez, France

These watercolors, painted when George Copeland Ault was seventeen years old, were inspired by family summers on a cape in northern France. For decades after the artist’s death, these memories preserved in paint remained with the Ault family. As Ault aged, his approach to depicting the world around him evolved.
