Made on the spot, this study has been identified as showing the Rio Santa Maria with the Palazzo Castelli (formerly Correr-Pisani) on the left. Stanfield was in Venice during the course of a Continental tour from August to October 1830. In a letter to his wife written on the day he made this study he wrote: ‘I am hard at it from morning till night (Venice is truly magnificent!!! Its palaces and churches, Boats and costume &.& make a whole not to be equaled [sic] in any other place in the world).’ Cf. Stanfield, 'Venice: San Giorgio Maggiore', P712, a work painted in the studio and much less spontaneous....
