Coffee Service for Alice Belin du Pont

This sumptuous coffee service by Tiffany and Company is decorated with Neoclassical garlands of leaves and stylized fluting. The understated style belies the extravagance of its material. The initials on each vessel stand for Alice Belin, and the service was likely a present for her marriage to Pierre S. du Pont in 1915. Du Pont would soon become president of his family's gunpowder business: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. Belin's father was president of du Pont's Pennsylvania subsidiary; thus the marriage was a consolidation of family and business interests.
