Turning ivory on a lathe was part of the education of the French royal family, who learnt the art under the guidance of experienced artisans. Both Louis XV and Louis XVI turned ivory, as did the daughters of Louis XV and the brothers of Louis XVI. This vase was thus probably partly made by a member of the French royal family, and is precisely described in a revolutionary inventory at the Palace of Versailles in 1795.
