This pair of decanters was acquired by the current Lord Rothschild as part of a collection of wine silver, other examples of which are also on display. The family have long-standing connections to the world of wine-making, dating from the acquisition of the two great Bordeaux vineyards, Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Lafite Rothschild in the 19th century. Jugs and decanters like this began to be used in the 19th century to serve hot or cold drinks at table.
