US Navy Ensign from the USS Vestal (AR-4)

This 48 star flag flew from the U.S. Navy repair ship, USS Vestal (AR-4), during World War II. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Vestal was struck by two bombs. A bomb penetrated USS Arizona's (BB-39) deck, and the concussion knocked the commanding officer, Commander Cassin Young, into the oily waters below. Young swam back to the ship, countermanded an abandon ship order, and ordered Vestal to beach itself. Commander Young was awarded the Medal of Honor for his brave actions on this Day of Infamy.
