Henry Moore said: "The human figure is what interests me most deeply, but I have found principles of form and rhythm from the study of natural objects such as rocks, bones and trees." Whether representational or abstract, the artist's undulating sculptures can be linked to these sources. Moore explained that the "Seated Woman is pregnant. The fullness in her pelvis and stomach is all to her right." Moore remembered the experience of his wife's pregnancy and how she could feel the infant on one side and then the other. It is this experience that he translates into sculptural form.
