On the sands near Ostend
Gudin was born in Paris in 1802 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then studied at the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824). Gudin first exhibited at the Salon in 1822, wining a prestigious gold medal in 1824. He became the leading painter of marine subjects and was appointed Peintre de la Marine Royale in 1827. Gudin was a friend of John and Joséphine Bowes and the inscription offert à Mme Bowes T.Gudin 1863 suggest that this work was a gift to Joséphine....
