The forty portraits assembled in this painting are probably copies after prints or drawings. This image recalls the Italian tradition of galleries or cycles of portraits of local men and women celebrated for their virtues or talents. These were often commissioned by city authorities as an expression of civic pride and to inspire citizens to imitate the excellent example set by the people portrayed....
