Portrait of Bruce McCandless and USS San Francisco

Portrait of Medal of Honor recipient Bruce McCandless. On the night of November 12, 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Lieutenant Commander McCandless took control of USS San Francisco(CA-38) after the commanding officer and all other bridge personnel were killed in action. Though concussed from repeated shell hits to the bridge, McCandless maintained control of the ship, dictated gunnery targets, and issued orders to the other ships of the task force. His actions maintained the battered battleline and led to a victory in the battle.
