Recumbent horse

China

This sculpture of a horse, made of a particularly lustrous pale jade, was probably acquired by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who had a keen interest in Eastern art. Jade is a very hard stone, particularly prized in China, where it is believed to ward off evil.
