After graduating with a Diploma in Social Studies in 1954, Nathan joined the Ministry of Labour as a Seamen’s Welfare Officer, eventually moving up to Director of the Labour Research Unit. Nathan served in the Ministry of Foreign A airs and later the Ministry of Defence as Director of the Security and Intelligence Division (SID) from 1971–1979. He retired from the civil service in 1982. Nathan was appointed High Commissioner to Malaysia and Ambassador to the United States. After these two stints, Nathan was Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large and became Director of the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies.
