The American Spelling Book (52.101)

A cardboard with green paper. Printed in Boston, Massachusetts by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer Andrews.Commonly referred to as the Blue Backed Speller. This is the first part of Webster's Grammatical Institute first published in Hartford, Ct. in 1783. It was renamed The American Speller in 1787 and the Elementary Spelling Book in 1829. A huge success, this book went through numerous editions with a total sale of over 100,000,000 copies. It is considered to be the "first attempt to nationalize the American language and provide a coherent system of education."
