Figure of a Man

Here, a merry band of musicians provides entertainment with a horn, drum and bagpipes, while a seated man enjoys a book. Although rendered with simple charm, thoughtful consideration has been given to accurate representations of the men's 18th-century dress and the individual instruments. The 18th century marked the beginning of English figure manufacture on a commercial scale. Made with molds, these forms could be reproduced at a reasonable cost, which attracted the middle class, the main patrons of earthen and stoneware objects.
