This plate and cup and saucer reflect the influence of Asian styles on European decorative arts; fanciful pagodas, exotic chinoiserie figures and rich gilding imitate Chinese and Japanese lacquer wares, such as those incorporated in the Chest of Drawers by Adam Weisweiler in this gallery. The decoration of a solid color with gold and platinum was uncommon at Sèvres, apparently first used on a service ordered by the French queen Marie Antoinette in 1789. Both the red and black grounds are rare, with red being the rarest of Sèvres ground colors.
