Village Street, Moret-sur-Loing

Sisley settled in the picturesque village of Moret-sur-Loing in 1889. Throughout the 1890s he painted the small medieval town with its stone bridge, mill, Gothic church and busy riverside.

In this small, late landscape Sisley hastily records a quiet and unassuming village scene in a bold and dramatic way. His brush heavily loaded with paint, Sisley uses rapid, broad, free strokes and strong vibrant colours to indicate sky, buildings and vegetation. Between the hasty broad brushstrokes in the sky, it is easy to see many areas of bare canvas.
