Tile from Dadoes of Platforms or Stairways to Daises

Unknown Artist

This dado tile (35.1.19) was part of the bannister of a stairway leading to a throne platform. The main panels of the platform are decorated with relief figures depicting Egypt's neighbors to the south and east. The man on the tile to which this has been joined (35.1.12)This man is shown paying homage to the Egyptian king. Because of the consistency with which Egyptian artists rendered the dress and identifying characteristics of foreign peoples, even fragmentary figures such as this one can be can be identified by his beard and his elaborately embroidered garment as a Syrian.
