Triptych Panel: Christ Crucified

Tuntematon taiteilija

Christ is shown crucified between two thieves, one the good thief on Christ’s right, youthful and clean shaven, who asked Christ to remember him, and the other the bad thief, bearded and bald, who abused Christ (Luke 24: 39-43). This ivory, which was once partly pigmented, is remarkable for the expressive naturalism and sculptural depth of the main figures. One of the greatest Gothic ivories to survive, it was probably made in Paris in the early fourteenth century.
