Tissot: The Adoration of the Golden Calf
In the Old Testament Book of Exodus, after Moses received the Ten Commandments he found the Israelites worshipping a Golden Calf with feasting and music. God forgave the Israelites, and the story became popular with Dutch patrons as it combined ideas of religious tolerance with the celebration of wealth and trade represented by rich fabrics, musical instruments, golden jewellery and elaborate tableware.
