Dining Room

The room was originally created as a 16th-century baroque medieval hall, which was then remodelled into a State Dining Room in the mid-18th century.

The ceiling was created by celebrated Edinburgh stuccoist Thomas Clayton in 1751 and the roundels were painted by Thomas Bardwell. Over ten years, Thomas Clayton created the plasterwork you see throughout the castle.

The stucco or plaster was traditionally a mixture of powdered white marble, chalk and white goat hair. The Dining Room has hosted grand entertainment and this continues today, with the Dining Room used for private events and wedding ceremonies.
