Tissot: Resting
Resting depicts one of Orpen’s favourite models in London, a striking young washerwoman called Lottie Stafford (1883-1953) who lived in a decrepit street in Chelsea called Paradise Walk. Lottie’s voluptuous beauty passes unnoticed in the busy laundry, and her bored resignation and Orpen’s loose brushwork suggest the influence of Manet and French Impressionism.
