Skirt (96.10.6.B)

Unknown Artist

Underskirt of cream silk satin, lined with tan twill weave cotton. Center back, which is covered by overdress, is tan cotton only. Front is darted to fit smoothly. Back is cartridge pleated, the fullness is controlled by inner tapes at knee length. Hem is faced like overdress, with pleated dust ruffle with lace edge. Waistband was lengthened 1" during 20th century in a synthetic fabric. Machine sewn with chain stitch.

Provenance Narrative Mary Cutts was born in 1865 in Vermont, but her family moved to Brooklyn, NY at some point before 1875 (when her father is listed in a city directory). Mary Cutts married Robert King in Brooklyn in 1889.

Her wedding dress uses some of the same silk as her mother's dress, which is also in the DAR Museum collection (96.10.1A and.B). This is in the overdress; this skirt has entirely different silk.
