The Moravian-born violinist Wilma Hallé (1838–1911) first rose to prominence in England in 1849. During that year the established musical prodigy completed a tour of the country. Painted after the sitter’s marriage to the conductor and pianist Sir Charles Hallé in 1888, this portrait shows Hallé in a commanding pose playing her instrument with grace and ease.
