Higher Broughton was one of the areas Lowry visited each week on his rent-collecting rounds. Here he shows a group of children on a patch of uneven ground surrounded by terraced houses, bare winter trees and derelict outhouses. It is hard to tell whether the group on the right are playing a game together or just talking. The two figures on the left keep company with the dogs who are also passing their time out on the wasteland.
