Die-Struck Coin - 19332

Unknown Maker

Dynasty: Gupta - Samudragupta , Lyrist Type

The Gupta kings ruled from Pataliputra (Patna) as their capital, and the coins of this era are known for their asthetics.

Though the early Gupta coins were influenced by Kushana coinage, later the Guptas created their own themes and compositions. Proud of their multi-faceted personalities, the Gupta kings consciously depicted themselves engaged in various martial as well as artistic activities on their coins. Simple informative legends gave way to ornate poetic Sanskrit language on coins. The Greek gods on their earlier coins were replaced by their Indian counterparts, for example, the Greek goddess of wealth Ardoksho was replaced by Lakshmi the goddess of wealth.
