Isaac Pontanus, a famous Amsterdam clergyman, gave this gold medal to his grandson for his eighth birthday. Engraved on the back are six verses in Latin and one in Greek. The poem exhorts its readers to lead a pious and virtuous life and to develop their talents. Attributes associated with the sciences and arts are depicted around the text.
