Kimkim

Unknown Artist

The kimkim, a pottery instrument played by Igbo women of Nigeria, is slapped on the side hole for low tones and on the vessel’s side for higher tones. Known also as udu drums, they were originally undecorated water jugs with an extra hole. Abbas Ahuwan’s vessels feature modern shapes, spikes, and polychrome that evoke traditional Nigerian symbols.
