Mother and Child
Utamaro composed this two image with considerable skill and humor, creating a circular movement through gazes and gestures. The mother and child are simultaneously involved in multiple activities. The mother arranges her coiffure before a mirror stand and nurses her baby, while he suckles, pinches her other nipple, and reaches for a toy that is offered by another woman.
