Country Lane in Damiette

In 1886, Armand Guillaumin's promotion to Night Inspector for the City of Paris allowed him to paint during the early morning hours when colors appeared most vibrant. He painted this winding road at least ten times at different moments of the day. As Guillaumin pushed beyond the Impressionoist practice of capturing light and shadow, his critics gave hime the nickname "ferocious colorist." This was a turning point for Guillaumin and Camille Pissarro. Although Pissarro also explored color and its related harmonies, his style of paint application soon diverged.
