Glove (96.70.3.B)

Unknown Artist

Wrist length cotton gloves, off-white, cut on bias. Back of hand embroidered with linen thread: three lines with a vine scrolling up each, and padded satin stitch polka dots at top and bottom of each line, and three dots between the lines.

Provenance Narrative Believed to have belonged to Lucy Austin Potter, born 1807 in Rensselaer Co., New York, married in 1824 in Cochocton, Ohio to Edward Potter. Lucy had ten children, two of whom died in infancy or childhood and two before the age of twenty. They lived in Trumbull County in northeastern Ohio where Lucy died in 1888. As these gloves are adult size, and Lucy married at the age of seventeen in Ohio, it seems likely these were made and worn exclusively in Ohio. Their shape does not suggest they were closely or professionally fitted, and were probably home-made.
