Portrait of a 24-year-old Man
Goltzius has here played with printmaking conventions. The printing plate – rather than the impression, or print, pulled from it – is the actual work of art. This is clear from his choice of material, silver, which is too soft to make many printed impressions. Moreover, the text is legible only on the silver plate; were it to be printed on paper, it would appear in reverse.
