Landscape near Annet-sur-Marne

Camille Flers, the son of a porcelain maker, decorated ceramics at the Nast factory in Paris. He first studied painting under the set designer Pierre Cicéri, but soon devoted himself to landscape painting.

Flers, along with artists such as Decamps, Rousseau and Corot, rejected the classicism of the École des Beaux-Arts in favour of painting directly from nature.

Flers died in Annet-sur-Marne on 27 June 1868 and later that year, on 14 December, Joséphine bought this work for 190 francs.
