Gentleman Looking at Something, 1960
Oil on plywood
Many of Lowry’s later works show small groups of people or individual figures, usually painted against a pure white background. A sense of place is often reduced to a bare minimum, for example a horizontal line indicating the edge of a pavement. Small in scale, Lowry often painted these works on pieces of board (sometimes the lids of cigar boxes saved for him by friends for that purpose).
